250,000 Copies Sold in Scandinavia:
A New Graphic Novel, Taking the Visual Path to Reading
London , 01 April
2008 – After a huge success in the Scandinavian countries, the publisher Young World Digital is bringing Taynikma to the United Kingdom.
Taynikma was first published in Denmark in 2005 and it was greeted with
enthusiasm in the booktrade, press and the general public. The series of ten books received the national
Orla Award in 2007 voted for by Danish children.
Taynikma offers a
dynamic new combination of words and pictures. By mixing traditional prose with
cartoon-inspired comic book sequences, the story unfolds to present both
compelling plotlines and exciting action. Text and artwork work together
without redundancies. Pictures set the scene and explain the action, while text
takes the reader through the story and into the characters’ thoughts.
Taynikma is a
promising new saga, that inspires positive values while enhancing children’s’
imagination. The visual graphics are a big help for parents to get kids closer
to books while the magical story makes a good read for children of all ages. Every
book also includes the Art School
pages with step-by-step guides to the drawing process, encouraging kids to
create drawings themselves. It is one thing to teach a child to read – it’s
another to teach a child to enjoy reading.
This is not only a book for kids, but a proper graphic novel,
easily readable and enjoyable by every range of readership, ranging from 8
years-old kids to teenagers to adults interested in graphic novels.

The Authors:
With highly praised artwork and a skilfully crafted storyline Taynikma books are an enjoyable read
for children, while adult readers will appreciate the consistent and high level
of quality in the author’s work. Taynikma was
created through several years of research and drafting, before the first book
was finally written. The creators of the
Taynikma universe and its characters are Merlin P. Mann and Jan Kjær, two Danish authors with a clear talent for children’s books. Long-time writer for Disney, Merlin P. Mann has penned book
versions of blockbusters such as Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. He has
recently published a book on role-playing games, and has previously written
stories for computer games. Jan Kjær graduated from the Joe Kubert School of Graphic Art
and has been art director on several LEGO projects. He has published a
bestselling book on drawing manga and was featured in a series of workshops on
national Danish television.
Book 1: Master Thief
14-year old Koto grew up with his mom and dad in the small village
of Korsay that lies at the foot of the Sarratum Mountains. Koto is both
adventurous and brave. He is nimble, and has an incredible ability to hide in
shadows. He sees just as well by night as by day. An ability he inherited from
neither his father nor his mother. Koto embarks on a dangerous journey to sell an old heirloom.
Once he reaches the city both guardsmen and thieves seek to steal it from him.
And in the shadows a mysterious person is holding the fate of Koto in his
hands.
Book 2: The Rats
Pickpockets have stolen a valuable heirloom from Koto. He
must go on a dangerous mission to get it back. On his journey, he encounters
new friends and learns more about his mythical powers and how to use them. He
is forced to fight against betrayal and stand up for himself. As he makes a dramatic escape through underground caves, he
faces a monstrous challenge beyond imagination!
Taynikma Reviews:
“Superb
fusion between book and comics, with the two media evenly balanced. What to do
about 8-10 year old boys who like role games and don’t mind having fantasy
stories read aloud, yet reach for the comics when they read themselves? Simply
hand them Taynikma.” (Danmarks Radio, 2005)
“Taynikma offers
unique entertainment for young readers who want both words and pictures” (B.T.,
Denmark, October 14 2005)
“… pictures and words
wrap around each other, propelling forward the action… They display a finely
tuned sensitivity towards the classic elements of the fairy tale…” (Politiken,
Denmark, November 19 2005)
“Drawings
of the highest quality, some of the best I have seen […] A detailed artistic
technique, inspired by Manga, with real love.” (Library Review, Denmark, November 2005)
